A Letter to Lakshmi

Sold by Patricia McCormick consists of the protagonist-Lakshmi. I have written a letter to the fictional character while she was living in the brothels. If you have not read the novel, it is about a young girl who gets sold into prostitution unknowingly. Once inside the brothel, she does the horrific work she's forced to do in order to pay off her dept and return back to her poor family in Nepal. With each page, readers acknowledge her struggle and cower with sympathy as we flip the pieces of paper continously, yearning for another vignette of her story. The novel is not based on a true story, but instead based on multiple true stories converged into one. I highly suggest you read it.

Dear Lakshmi,

Namaste. How are you? I know you're having a hard time but I want you know it's not your fault. You didn't deserve this no one does. They took away your innocence but they can't take your hope. You're not alone; 3 million girls are brought into prostitution in India every year. You have to stay strong Lakshmi; I know that you can do it. You have made it this far and have been through things that I alone cannot imagine. You have overcome so many things and you are still alive even as the situation may be. I just want you to know there are kind people in the world. I know this letter won't really affect you but I care and it sickens me to know that this happens especially to girls so young. I know it will get better. I support you and I know you can make it through. Your passion for education and learning will take you far. You are incredibly smart and your determination and hope are so uplifting, these qualities in itself are amazing. Please do not give up hope.
